Part Three

Twenty-Nine

A police car would have blue lights that might make her journey quicker. She drove as fast as the Saab would take her, Zoë pale in the seat beside her.

On the M20, a Polish refrigerated lorry pulled out in front of her without signalling. She slammed on the brakes, waited for it to inch its way past another lorry, then changed down and sped past it.

‘I dreamed it, Mum. I dreamed it all,’ said Zoë. ‘I dreamed he drowned.’

It took her forty minutes to reach the small marina. Police cars were gathered in the lane near an industrial cabin that seemed to be used as a diner.

Alex abandoned her car and trotted past the parked cars in the dark, Zoë at her side, making their way towards the lights ahead and a thin line of police tape.

‘Can’t go this way now. You live on one of the boats?’ A constable had stepped out of the darkness.

‘I’m a police officer,’ she said, though in her hurry she had left her shoulder bag and warrant card in the car and had nothing on her to prove it. ‘Where is Detective Constable Jill Ferriter?’

‘Who?’

Alex attempted patience. ‘A man was pulled from the water here, I understand.’

The constable nodded. ‘In a bad way. Carted off in the helicopter. They say he probably didn’t make it.’

‘Oh. He was dead?’

‘Were you a friend of his? You best speak to—’

‘Were?’ Zoë replied, pale.

Alex’s phone rang. She turned away from the copper. ‘Jill?’

‘Where are you?’ Jill asked.

‘I’m here. Where’s Bill? Where are you?’

‘They airlifted him to Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. He was unconscious when they dragged him from the water.’

‘The policeman outside said he was dead.’

Looking past the constable, she could see moored boats. From some, lights shone.

‘They opened up a cafe for us. Come and join us. If you’re by the boats, it’s just on the other side of the cordon.’
